SOLID WASTE

Our Vision: Waste is reimagined as a valuable resource with systems and infrastructure to minimize consumption and maximize reuse.

WHY THIS MATTERS

Transforming Our Use of Resources

The choices we make to buy, use, and dispose of items have consequences for our environment and our economy. By reducing the amount of waste we create and finding innovative ways to recycle and reuse materials, we decrease emissions, prevent pollution, and create local workforce and economic opportunities.

WASTE DIVERSION

Recoverable Materials

Most of what we send to the landfill could be composted, reused, or recovered. By taking action to keep these materials out of the landfill and supporting the systems that can divert more, we can actively reduce the amount of waste that we throw away, extend the life and value of resources, and help create jobs in support of a healthy environment.

WASTE DIVERSION

Taking Strides to Reduce Food Waste

In 2022, Cary established a one-year food waste drop-off pilot program to explore solutions and services to reduce the quantity of compostable materials in our waste stream. The pilot was a success: the collection goal was exceeded by 150% and 40 tons of food scraps were collected.

To further enhance this service, a second drop off location opened in early 2024. The drop-off service is now a permanent resource for citizens and supports Cary's long-standing commitment to waste reduction and diversion.

LEADING BY EXAMPLE

Cary Goes Electric

Cary recently ordered a Mack® LR Electric Class 8 refuse vehicle. In doing so, we became the first municipality in North Carolina to order a 100% electric sanitation truck. Built to our specifications and unique to Cary, this first-of-its-kind electric sanitation truck includes a fully electric arm for receptable pick up, in addition to a fully electric chassis.

This pilot effort aims to guide the future EV transition of heavy-duty fleet vehicles and reaffirms Cary's commitment to sustainability and a safe, healthy future. The Mack LR Electric offers Cary reduced emissions, maintenance, and fuel costs.
